My time at MOTAT

Tausala’s time at MOTAT

Beginning
“Oh goody”! I was super excited on the day that we got to go to MOTAT! I was rushing outside
of school and telling my friends how excited I was. We got to MOTAT and our educator Kent
showed us where to put our bags. We put our bags down and Kent was having a little talk to
all of us about the rules and other things about MOTAT.

Scavenger Hunt
After Kent talked to us, he gave each group a map which was a scavenger hunt.

Fire Station
The first place we went to was the Fire Station. In the Fire Station we saw lots of old things
AND THEN...I saw a realistic looking police officer dummy! In the fire station we had to do a
scavenger hunt. We found some candles, books, hoses, helmets, and fire trucks.

Village
After a good look around the Fire Station, we went to the villages. The first village we went to
was so far the scariest village because there was ANOTHER dummy! In the village we had to
find things that were part of the scavenger hunt. We found things such as a pot of eggs, kettles
and a washing room.

School House
When we got inside the school house, I heard that every morning when the children got to
class they had to do two things. The first thing they had to do was to stand at their desks and
sing the national anthem in English. There was also a sign that said “NO speaking in Maori”.
The second thing they had to do every morning was to put their fingernails on the desks and
the teacher would go around and see each of the children's fingernails. If their nails were dirty
or had nail polish on them, then the teacher would give them a smack with a cane.

Chapel
After we went to the school house we went to the chapel. We got inside and it was like Christ
the King Catholic Church but a mini version. In the Church it was really really tiny. On the wall
behind the priest table there was an eagle that looked like it was looking DIRECTLY at me.

Inventors Room
In the Inventors Room there were a lot of old cars and trams. There were rusty and old vintage
trams and cars. Me and my group looked at all the vintage cars and trams until it was the time
to go on the real tram.

Tram Ride
Our tram driver Rob. He was driving my group and other groups in the tram. We were driving
past the zoo and we saw little baby pukekos that were so cute. It was super noisy because of
the wheels on the tram track. We went past the zoo and back. Rob stopped the tram in the
middle of somewhere and he told us to go in front of the tram so he could talk to us about what
life was like in the past. When we got out of the tram we went in front of it, as Rob told us to.
Rob told us things like when trams were invented and who invented them. He then let 2
people pull something on the top of a tram that I think is for when you need to stop the tram.
We got back to MOTAT within 5-10 minutes

Above and Beyond
We got back from the tram ride and my group FINALLY got to go the Above and Beyond
exhibition. Inside Above and Beyond there were lots of different games to play. There were
games where you pretended to be a bird and race the other birds. There was a game where
you could make your own kind of airplane and verse other players in the game. There was a
game where you picked up rubbish in outer space with robots. The last game entailed
standing on a box and following the instructions on the screen. There was also a little seating
area with three TV’S! I never thought anyone would need three TV’s. Above and Beyond was
really fun especially the games.

Technology Room
It was the time that we got to go to the technology room. In the technology room there were old
games like, Donkey Kong, Pacman, old TV’s, old printers, tablets and iPads, a selfie machine
where you could take selfies. The selfies were projected onto a screen. There were old
radios, video games, telephones, typewriters and old cameras. Some of the old things
were really rusty and weird looking because they were old and they came from the 1800’s.
The technology room was kind of fun because there was a computer we were allowed to go on.

The Pumphouse

After lunch we went to the Pumphouse. When we got inside the Pumphouse the smell was
really gross that I wanted to get out immediately. Also it was really hot inside. I was really
unhappy because the Pumphouse was not operating on the day.

Conclusion

Going to MOTAT was really fun and I enjoyed seeing all the new displays. I was also sad
because the old displays that were really cool have been taken away. Other than that,
MOTAT was really fun. I loved going to MOTAT and hope to go again.
